- October 1.
- I looked every day for Father until Wednesday, October 1, when he came about noon. He had been since Friday coming, having looked in every hospital on the way for fear of missing me. He slept on the barn floor to- night and said ‘he could if I could.’
- October 3.
- Friday. We started for home taking Bartlett with us. We went to Hagerstown in an open farm wagon. I lay on my back on a bed, with as hot a sun pouring into my face as I ever experienced.
- Hagerstown is about 14 miles from the hospital where I was at Keedysville. Found when we got to Hagerstown that it was guarded by a Provost Guard. Had some trouble getting Bartlett through. Did not leave Hagerstown till the next day. We slept in a Dutch bar-room, the only place we could get.
- October 4.
- Saturday we took the cars at 7:30 for Harrisburg. The officer of the day being a pretty good fellow, he put Bartlett through. Arrived at Harrisburg about noon and took cars for Philadelphia where we arrived a little after dark.
- October 6.
- We stayed at the St. Louis Hotel until Monday morning, October 6 when we took cars for New York, crossing the ferry from Jersey City. We took the Steamer ‘Empire State’ for Fall River and arrived home about 11:00 P.M.
