- August 8.
- Went back to camp again for good. Joined Capt. Niles Company E and never regretted it. Was appointed Corporal by him. Nothing of importance occurred at camp until August 22, when we left Camp Stanton for the seat of War. Went to Boston in cars by way of Salem. Arrived in Boston about 2:30 P.M. Saw Father and Mother on Canal St.
- Had a hard march through Boston to the Fall River Depot, where we took cars for Fall River. Arrived there about 7 P.M. and took the steamboat “Bay State” for Jersey City where we arrived about 9 A.M. next day.
- August 23.
- Took cars for Philadelphia. Very pretty country through New Jersey, but rather light soil, well adapted for raising early vegetables for which purpose it is mostly used. The farmers send their produce to Phila., N. York and Boston. Saw the largest peach orchards and melon patches I ever saw.
- Arrived in Philadelphia about 4:00 or 5:00 P.M. Crossed the Delaware River on a ferry-boat to the city, stacked arms in the street and partook of a collation at the Union Relief Ass’n. rooms, provided by the ladies of the City.
- The ladies of Phila, scarcely do anything else but provide for the comfort of the soldiers who are daily passing through the city. There are also many of the sick and wounded brought here from the seat of war. Lucky is the soldier who is sent to a Phila. hospital. It is certainly the “City of Brotherly Love.”
- After washing and resting awhile we took cars for Baltimore. As we did not start immediately, we had a good time ‘kissing the pretty gals’ who flocked around us in the cars, always willing to be kissed by a ‘sojar-boy.’
