Old Milton Town Hall
Old Milton Town Hall

Old Milton Town Hall in autumn

Designed by the architectural firm of Hartwell and Tilden, it was built in 1878 adjacent to the 1837 Greek Revival town hall that proved insufficient in size for town meeting. A distinctive red brick and granite Romanesque Revival building, it had an arched entrance with an asymmetrical tower and interesting architectural details. The roof was of slate with molded terra cotta detail on the roof ridge and tower. In the late 1960s, there arose a controversy about replacing the town hall, which eventually was done, and this venerable building demolished, in 1971. The present Milton Town Hall was designed by Richard C. Stauffer & Associates. Today, the Lira Bandstand is on the former site of the old town hall.
