Central Avenue Depot |
In 1857, the Dorchester and Milton Branch of the Old Colony Railroad was laid out as a spur between Ashmont Station and a depot at Mattapan Square. There were two passenger depots in Milton: Milton station in Milton Village, and Central Avenue station. A two-story wood framed building, this station had a waiting room and ticket office on the first floor and a simple wooden platform. In 1927, the railroad branch was closed, and two years later a surface trolley, virtually running along the same tracks, was opened. Today, this trolley line is listed in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not as the only trolley to pass through a cemetery (Cedar Grove Cemetery) in the world. |
